Self-Awareness

As our daughter ages she is becoming more aware of how she presents as a person with Autism and more importantly how others engage with her. As a parent the most difficult part of caring for a loved one on the spectrum is the lack of true empathy and genuine willingness to understand and support this community. They are often caught between two worlds – one in which they are not “disabled” enough and one in which they are “too disabled”. I have noticed more recently that our daughter is acknowledging this conundrum more and more. Self- Awareness is a beautiful and difficult skill for persons with ASD. I am hopeful, having this skill set it will help her navigate life’s many challenges.
